Dr Anthony Fauci, director of the US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said that while the response to the Coronavirus encourages him in some areas of the country, the numbers in general are not significant.
“We now have nearly 200,000 deaths in this country,” Fauci said Monday night on the Daily Show with Trevor Noah.
“We have more than 6 million infections. You can’t look at that and say it’s cool.”
But Fauci said he was seeing some encouraging developments.
“There are parts of the country that are doing well, and they are doing well,” he said. “At the moment, what I like that I see is that some numbers are going down.”
Fauci said the baseline was still very high.
No fewer than 20,000 new infections per day.
“When we tried to open up the economy, as it is, some states jumped ahead of the guidelines, and some people didn’t listen to what the governors were saying and what the mayors said, and they remember, we’ve got to 70,000 and now we’re back to 30 or 40,000 (new cases per day).”
Fauci said he is concerned that the number of new infections is still too high as the fall and winter seasons come and people will have to stay home more.
Fauci said you are at a disadvantage when you have 40,000 new infections a day.
“This is not a good place to be.”
