In the Senate race debate in South Carolina on Saturday night, there was more social distancing than the two platforms thirteen feet apart.
Jaime Harrison, Democratic rival for Senator Lindsey Graham, was protected by a large glass screen, and prior to the debate, his campaign manager tweeted that the incumbent senator should go into quarantine.
As chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Graham this week’s prolonged exposure to Senator Mike Lee, who has tested positive for Covid-19 – according to CDC guidelines, he should be in quarantine.
Fittingly, the first question asked at night related to the coronavirus epidemic, how many government officials were newly infected in the past day, and whether policy had impeded the response to the virus.
Senator Graham responded first, defending the handling of the pandemic, saying that “the virus is a problem that came out of China, not Trump Tower.”
Then he moved his answer, pledging that with his position on the Judicial Committee, Judge Amy Connie Barrett would be confirmed before the Supreme Court.
Mr Harrison said he would not blame President Donald Trump or anyone for the onset of the disease, but he would blame it on whether it was taken seriously.
“Tonight I’m taking this seriously. That’s why I’m putting this plexiglass. Because it’s not just about me, it’s about the people in my life that I have to take care of as well: my sons, my wife and my grandmother.
Mr. Harrison lost his aunt to Corona virus in the summer.
The discussion comes on the second day of the president being hospitalized due to coronavirus at Walter Reed Medical Center.
South Carolina has more than 151,000 confirmed cases of Covid-19 and has officially recorded 3,442 deaths from the virus.
There were 7.4 million cases nationwide and more than 209,000 deaths.
