Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell has already said he is happy that the Democrats have begun impeachment. That’s cool, because McConnell is usually an ally of President Trump. He announced tonight that he has yet to make a final decision on how to vote. “I will listen to the legal arguments that will be presented to the Senate,” a statement said.
McConnell also said that “there is no chance for a fair and serious trial to impeach him” before the swearing in ceremony of President-elect Joe Biden on January 20. He says that the focus of the US Congress for the next seven days should be on “enabling the swearing-in and an orderly transfer of power.” Even if the trial begins this week, McConnell said there would be no ruling on Trump leaving the White House due to time constraints.
But it remains to be seen whether the Senate will indict President Trump. A number of Republicans have already indicated that they will vote with the Democrats against President Trump, but it remains unclear if a two-thirds majority will be so.
