The United States ends restrictions on contacts with Taiwan. For decades, according to Secretary of State Pompeo, the United States imposed restrictions on itself to satisfy the Communist government in China. Pompeo’s statement says: “It’s over.”
The minister speaks of “complex restrictions” in communications between Taiwanese and US diplomats and soldiers and other officials. For example, Taiwanese officials were not permitted to enter the United States Department of State building. So the meetings were held in hotels.
The Chinese government considers Taiwan a breakaway province of the People’s Republic of China. Beijing is trying to keep the country isolated from the rest of the world, including by asking other countries not to maintain official contacts with the Taipei government.
Main ally
Washington is Taiwan’s most important ally as a lender and supplier of weapons. Tensions between China and the United States have not subsided under the Trump presidency, in part due to the Taiwan issue. It was recently announced that the US ambassador to the United Nations will visit Taiwan next week, prompting strong criticism from Beijing again.
A spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry said that some “anti-China politicians” would do everything in their power to undermine the relationship between China and the United States at the end of their term. Within a week and a half in the United States, power will be handed over to Joe Biden and his government.
