Documentary filmmakers in Amsterdam keep an ordered overview of the films they have voted for in their upcoming Oscar nominations. “But we can tell you everything else,” says Peter Latester. “At least we think so, but we didn’t ask anyone,” adds Petra Lataster-Czisch.
Nominations will be announced in 23 categories. Amsterdam documentary filmmakers Peter Latester (Amsterdam, 1955) and Petra Luster Chich (Dessau, 1954), known for popular documentaries such as Not without you (2010), I woke up in a bad dream (2013) in Miss Kate’s children (2016), was invited by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to vote in the “Feature Documentary Films” category last July.
At that time, the Academy invited more than 800 filmmakers to become members, with the aim of creating more diversity within the organization. Roughly half of the new memberships are female, one in three is colored, and half of the academy’s new voters are not from the United States. Dutch photographer Jasper Wolf and stuntman Willem de Boeckeler have been members of the Academy since last year and can thus vote for the Oscars for the first time this year.
