Letitia James, New York’s attorney general, says she is “deeply disappointed by the result, but respects it”. In parts of the United States, a citizen’s grand jury is assessing whether there is enough evidence to prosecute.
News of the death of 41-year-old black American Broad and apparent attempts to cover up the issue sparked protests in the United States last summer. At that time, there were already widespread demonstrations against institutional racism in the country’s police forces. After Tuesday’s decision went according to New York times 150 people took to the streets to protest.
Brod died in hospital in March of last year, seven days after officers arrested him in Rochester, New York. His brother had called the police himself because Brod – who is presumably psychotic – ran out of his home without wearing any outerwear.
When he was caught, Brod was wearing a black hood over his head. According to the officers, this was because the man spat around and was afraid of contracting the Coronavirus. Brod was pushed to the ground and passed out from suffocation.
The case was not revealed until the summer when the officers’ camera photos were released after months of family litigation. Customers involved in Prude’s death are currently on hold.
