UpdateThe personal data of 533 million Facebook users was leaked online again today in a hacker forum. This was written by Bloomberg News. This relates to phone numbers, full names, location data, email addresses and other personal information that were already stolen in 2019. Experts warn that this data could be misused to commit fraud.
The data posted online includes data from more than 533 million Facebook users from 106 countries, including 32 million from the United States, 11 million from the United Kingdom, and 6 million from India, according to Business Insider. The Insider website states that it also checks the validity of the data in a sample and warns that the data can provide valuable information to cybercriminals or fraudsters.
The tweet below containing information about the leak indicates that data from more than 5 million Dutch have also been leaked.
Read on for the tweet below.
Tweet from Alon Gal, co-founder of Hudson Rock who specializes in cybercrime, who discovered the information leak today and then commented on it. Interested in the trade. According to Gal, someone on a hacker forum advertised in January with an automated search engine that could provide the phone numbers of hundreds of Facebook users. Then that guy asked for money for it, but it looks like the data today has been dumped on the forum for nothing. The forum is accessible to anyone who creates a profile. The information released – divided into 106 packages – can be downloaded by those who have purchased Forum Credits.
Bloomberg News is now reporting it’s related to the old data. “This is old data that was reported earlier in 2019,” a Facebook spokesperson wrote in an emailed statement to the news agency. “We detected this issue and solved it in August 2019.” Old data can still be linked to people.
Cambridge Analytica
This is not the first time that Facebook’s credibility has been lost for privacy reasons. The most famous example of this is the privacy scandal surrounding Cambridge Analytica, which broke out in March 2018. The user data ended up leaked at the UK campaign agency. For example, Cambridge Analytica had unauthorized access to the personal data of tens of millions of Facebook users. This information was used, among other things, in Donald Trump’s election campaign in 2016.
