Two smaller F1 teams joined Haas and stated that their full focus this year is on designing and building F1 cars for 2022, with brand new technical bases. Not only Haas but also Williams and Alfa Romeo throw the towel.
“This season is a transition season,” explains Williams CEO Jost Capito. “We are totally focused on the 2022 because there’s almost nothing we can do with a 2021 car. We’ll fight during the season, we’ll attack, but we know the options are limited.”
Insufficient resources
It’s a similar story in Alfa Romeo, where Technical Director Jan Monchaux revealed that the decision to switch to 2022 has already been made. He told Auto Motor und Sport: “The updates that we are bringing to Imola were completed two or three weeks ago. The design department will now focus on the project for 2022.”
He said the Swiss-based team, which later raced as Sauber, was struggling with insufficient resources to get the new venture off to a good start since the last major rule change in 2017. “The car was four and a half seconds behind, five seconds behind everyone else. And we still suffer from it. If you start with such a handicap according to these rules, it will be over. You will not catch it again. “
“So it is very important for us that the first car is compliant with these new rules. Then we will no longer have a major obstacle to struggle with constantly until we are not the last and carry the red lantern.”
