It shows what happened after officers pulled Wright along a roadside into Brooklyn Center, north of Minneapolis. Wright had committed a traffic offense and officers discovered there was a warrant pending for his arrest. Wright lay on the side of his car. When the officers want to handcuff him, he gets separated and gets into the car.
Then an officer withdrew her firearm, called “Taser” several times and fired a bullet at him. As Wright was driving away, she said, “I shot him.” Wright stopped a few blocks away and was found dead.
Police Chief Ganon spoke about a mistake at a press conference. Ganon said, “When I see the footage, and hear the officer, I think she wanted to use her electric taser on Wright. She fired a bullet instead.” He doesn’t want to reveal the agent’s name, but he said she has a lot of experience.
Devastation
After Wright’s death, clashes broke out with the police. For example, an angry crowd gathered in front of the Brooklyn Police Station. Police cars were destroyed and stones were thrown. Then the officers fired rubber bullets. At least two people were injured.
The atmosphere in Minneapolis is tense. The site of Wright’s death is about ten miles from where George Floyd died last year after Officer Derek Chauvin sat with one knee on Floyd’s neck for consecutive minutes. The lawsuit against Chauvin is currently underway.
