The mother of the vineyard, Jean-Philippe Victor, passed away a year ago. So her villa became vacant. Victor wanted to sell, but he couldn’t say goodbye due to emotional reasons. He wanted to come to terms with losing his mother first.

Shortly thereafter, however, he receives a phone call from his mother’s former neighbor: The villa has been broken into, writes Het Nieuwsblad. Then the boat itself found that the squatters had robbed the house. It turns out that the asylum seekers are from Bosnia. He called the police, and the officers came to take a look, but they did nothing.

It was the start of a long and costly legal battle that had already cost him around 8,000 euros. But there was a light at the end of the tunnel: a judge ordered the squatters to be fired.
In France, however, there is a law that states that people should not be evicted from their homes during the winter months for humanitarian reasons.
Jean-Philippe Victor began writing letters to the mayor as well as to President Macron. But either they couldn’t help or they didn’t get an answer.
A protest in the village
For the grape grower, the scale is now full. Last week he appealed to all villagers to join a protest march. He invited everyone with posters and banners.

The response was tremendous. There were hundreds of them, with face masks, but without sticking 1.5 meters away.
Refuse to leave
Victor now discovers that the asylum seekers have placed some of his mother’s furniture outside in the garden. And that there’s also a lot of damage inside.
According to Mayor Natalie Gonzalez, the city council has already offered the squatters – ten asylum seekers from Bosnia – another home. But they refused to leave the villa.

Only from May 31, when the “winter break” ends, can the mayor order the police to evacuate the house. But the police are afraid that the villagers will not wait that long and intervene on their own. Especially now that far-right politicians are implicated in the case. “They are basically trying to tap into political capital here,” said Mayor Gonzales.
Winegrower Jean-Philippe Victor feels abandoned by the government. But whether or not he still wants to pay for water and electricity every month. Because even if “for humanitarian reasons” he cannot close it now.
