As a European champion and vice-world champion, the Netherlands has enjoyed an excellent position in the world of women’s football for several years, and this is also reflected in the draw for tomorrow in Zurich. The Olympic bowl ranking is based on the world ranking, and the Netherlands is ranked third after the United States and Olympic champion Germany. The latter country could not defend this title as it was not able to qualify for the upcoming games.
In the draw, Orange will avoid the United States and the host country Japan, who are also in Pot 1. The showdown with the powerful nations Sweden (World Cup semi-finals), Great Britain (World Cup semi-finalists) and Brazil (two silver medalists at the Games) Possible in the first round.
Orange is, along with Sweden and Great Britain, the only European country to take part in the Games. Due to last place in the 2019 World Cup in France, the team qualified for the tournament. Canada, Australia and China make up Pot 3, into Pot 4, New Zealand, Chile and Zambia are the countries. The numbers 1 and 2 from each group will qualify for the quarter-finals, along with the top 3 numbers. There will be three groups from four countries.
The tournament does not only take place in Tokyo. Sapporo, Miyagi, Kashima, Saitama and Yokohama are also host cities.
It is the first time that orange women are allowed to participate in the games. The tournament should be the last piece of national coach Sarina Wegmann, who led Orange to the European title and the World Cup Final. Being awarded a medal in Japan would be the crowning achievement.
Wiegman recently booked mixed results with Orange. In November he lost it to the United States. A desperate training defeat early this month against Spain was followed by a big win over Australia. Previously, Belgium and Germany were beaten in friendlies. The Netherlands qualified without losing any points for the next European Championship.
