Indian exports of baby corn are progressing well. The product is available all year round, but May and June can be difficult months due to lack of water. Fortunately, there were torrential rains last season, so enough water was stored. Coronavirus may have an impact on the season, as air freight rates have risen sharply.
According to Kaushal Khakhar, CEO of Kay bee Exports, the baby corn season is doing well this year, even with the tough months ahead. “In India, baby corn is readily available in large quantities 365 days a year. Thanks to the favorable weather conditions this year, the season has been strong, with high demand and annual delivery programs for our customers. May and early June are the tough months in which water shortages play a role, but because of Heavy rains in the previous season, there is sufficient stock of water stored this year.
Koshal says that about 90-95% of young corn exported from India goes to the UK: “Young corn is one of the staple vegetables of Kay Bee Exports which we have been a pioneer in since our company was founded more than 30 years ago. It has gained strong experience. On average, we export around 200 tons of baby corn every month to various countries around the world. The UK definitely stands out because it is the source of around 90% to 95% of the young corn that India exports. This is a bit unusual, as we see that All EU countries have a similar consumption pattern, but baby corn appears to be very popular in the UK and not in other European countries.
“Although the season looks good so far, there are still factors that could affect the season,” says Koshal. “As of today and despite the revival of Covid-19 in India last month, the season has been very encouraging as higher revenues have been exported so far and annual programs planned with our customers for the coming months, assuring us that these high returns will remain stable.”
Fortunately for cai bee resources, the horticulture sector will be one of the least affected as it is exempt from the restrictions of the closure. “Agriculture and horticulture are classified as an essential service in India, and the government has been very proactive and helpful in ensuring that no interruptions occur in the transportation of horticultural products. Even during very strict lockdowns, our vehicles have managed to turn smoothly. , Despite the greatly reduced air cargo capacity. Airlines operate cargo or passenger flights (but there are no passengers). So despite the restrictions on passenger movement, cargo traffic is uninterrupted. “
