The US Supreme Court approved a review of Mississippi’s anti-abortion law. The law prohibits abortion if the woman in question is more than 15 weeks pregnant.
The limit has been 24 weeks since 1973, due to the Supreme Court ruling in Roe v. Wade. In it, the Supreme Court ruled that most laws banning abortion are unconstitutional.
In the case of 1992 it was emphasized that abortion must be possible in order for the fetus to become viable outside the womb. Doctors generally assume 24 to 28 weeks for this.
Mississippi wanted to enact a strict abortion law in 2018, but it met with much opposition. An abortion clinic challenged the law and won, after which the state went to a higher court and lost there as well.
Many conservative Americans have always wanted to outlaw abortion altogether, or at least to tighten the law. They often indicate that life is sacred and that it begins when conception or shortly afterwards.
The Supreme Court now consists of six conservative and three liberal justices. The Republicans, who control Mississippi, hope they will have enough judges this time.
