Rinus van Kalmthout finished second in the first race of the weekend in IndyCar in Detroit at Belle Island Park Street Circuit. The Dutch race driver managed to podium in the final stage of the race over 70 laps. He finished the race 1.7 seconds ahead of Swedish winner Markus Ericsson, the former Formula 1 driver.
Behind “VeeKay”, Van Kalmthout’s name in racing in the US, Pato O’Ward took third place. The Mexican started from first place.
This was Ericsson’s first win at the IndyCar circuit. Australian Will Power looks set to win in Detroit, but the race leader was unable to start his engine after the restart.
Van Calmuth qualified 12th for this GP. This was his second podium finish in the IndyCar Series this season. Roughly a month ago, he took his first win at the GMR Grand Prix in Indianapolis. Vikai is currently fourth in the standings with 231 points, led by Spaniard Alex Palo (263 points).
Sunday is the second GP race in Detroit. So far, each of the first seven races of the 16-game season has had a different winner.
