Novak Djokovic reached the third round at Wimbledon with ease on Wednesday. The Serbian world number one was too strong for Kevin Anderson to repeat the 2018 final in three sets.
Djokovic, 34, made a clear impression against the one-year-old Anderson. Losing another set in the first round to Britain’s Jack Draper (ATP-253), this time the Serb was on alert from the start and only made six unnecessary errors on center court in London.
After winning the first set 6-3, Djokovic showed his form in the second set by breaking South Africa twice (6-3). Then the third set went fairly easily to the winner of the last edition of Roland Garros: 6-3.
In the next round, Djokovic will face the winner of the match between US qualifier Dennis Kudla and Italian Andreas Seppi. That match was scheduled for later in the day.
Djokovic is chasing his 19th Grand Slam title at Wimbledon, breaking him by a long way from the records of Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer. The Serbian has already won five times in London. He took the 2018 title by dealing with Anderson in the final: 6-2, 6-2, 7-6 (3).
Nadal is missing in London, as he entered a respite after losing the Roland Garros final against Djokovic. Federer escaped elimination by Adrian Mannarino on Tuesday in the second round.
Cilic starts without losing a set
Marin Cilic started his Wimbledon sojourn by not giving up a set to Salvatore Caruso, ranked 96th in the world. The 2017 finalist won 7-6 (5), 7-6 (1), 6-1 after nearly three hours of play.
Nick Kyrgios dealt with Ugo Humbert in a thriller. The rebellious Australian trailed 1-2 in sets, but recovered and eventually won by taking the fifth set and sealing the set 9-7.
Andrei Rublev finished with Lloyd George Harris in an hour and a half. The world No. 7 won in three sets against South Africa (6-1, 6-2, 7-5) and will face Fabio Fognini in the third round.
Andy Murray is currently still working on the Wimbledon match. The two-time winner will play Germany’s Oscar Otti in the second round.
