Israel launched air strikes on targets in neighboring Lebanon in response to shelling from Lebanese territory. According to the IDF, a number of rocket launch sites were targeted.
Yesterday, three missiles were fired at Israel from southern Lebanon. No injuries were reported, according to the Israeli Red Cross, but the rockets caused serious fires. Israel responded immediately with artillery fire.
The attacks from Lebanon were not announced. According to international news agencies, the missiles were launched from Lebanese territory controlled by Iran-backed Hezbollah.
‘Warning’
Israel’s Defense Minister, Benny Gantz, said the air strikes were a warning. “Obviously we can do a lot more, but we hope it won’t be necessary.” Lebanese President Aoun condemned the attacks and spoke of an attack on his country.
The bombing follows tensions surrounding the attack on an oil tanker off the coast of Oman last week. Two crew members were killed.
The tanker was operated by the British company Zodiac Maritime, owned by an Israeli billionaire. Israel, the United States and the United Kingdom hold Iran responsible for the attack, which may have been carried out by a drone, but Tehran has denied the allegations.
