Although director Denis Villeneuve has more or less confirmed that his Dune will be getting a sequel, the sequel isn’t quite ready yet. The arrival of the film depends on the performance of the first part. But not where you think.
Since we could yet always rely on box office shows to know if a movie was successful enough for a sequel, that rule doesn’t apply now. Instead, the green light is now largely dependent on the film’s performance on HBO Max.

The first part of the franchise will be released in October in cinemas and in the United States on the HBO Max streaming service. The film follows Paul Atreides as he travels with his father, Duke of Leto Atreides, to the dangerous planet Arrakis.
Leto accepts domination of the planet, realizing it is a trap set by his political enemies. The planet contains the only natural supply of spice, a desirable resource that enables supernatural intellect, allowing humans to live abnormally long and travel faster than light.
Variety now reports that a sequel will be based on the film’s performance on HBO Max. This confidence seems to frame Warner Bros. , because he also gave permission to an occasional string called Dune: Sisters.
