Demonstrators walk a climate rally in central Brussels. It is an initiative of more than eighty organizations united in the Climate Alliance. They want politicians to do more to mitigate the effects of climate change.
Police in the Belgian capital estimate the number of participants at about 25,000, VRT reported. Organizers believe there are 70,000 protesters on the ground.
“The urgency has never been this much before,” says Zanna Vannerengm, Vice President of the Climate Alliance. “The climate crisis has ruthlessly entered our living rooms, think of the floods this summer. Meanwhile, politicians look like disastrous tourists and they certainly aren’t rolling up their sleeves enough.”
More isolation and better public transportation
The Climate Alliance has developed an action plan with more than a hundred solutions. For example, organizations believe that there is more to be done in the area of insulation. They also want more renewable energy and better public transportation.
The organizations believe that the costs of these plans should be borne primarily by the largest polluters. For the less wealthy, the financial consequences should be limited.
The demonstration takes place on the occasion of the United Nations Climate Change Conference, from 31 October to 12 November in Glasgow. The intention is for countries to increase their climate ambitions there, in order to limit global warming.
