The Belgian Oscar-nominated film, “Un Monde” by Brussels-based director Laura Wandel, has been nominated for the Academy Award for Best International Film shortlist. The academy announced this on Tuesday. The short film “T’es morte Hélène” by the Belgian director was shortlisted for the Best Short Film category.
“Un monde,” released in English as “Playground,” tells the story of Nora and her older brother Abel. When Nora goes to first grade, she sees her older brother Abel being bullied on the playground. While her father wants her to talk, her brother wants her to shut up. Above all, Nora hopes to make new friends, which leaves her with a devastating choice.
The Belgian film was selected along with 14 other films from entries from 92 countries. Academy members are now invited to watch the 15 films and cast their votes. Final nominations will be announced on February 8, 2022, then we’ll know if “Un Monde” is part of the final selection of five films.
The short film “T’es morte Hélène” by Belgian director Michel Blanchart is one of 15 finalists in the Best Short Film category. The short film will also be adapted into a feature film in the United States. “T’es morte Hélène” tells the story of Maxime, a young man in search of stability, who is haunted by the ghost of his recently deceased girlfriend Helen. Maxim wants to put an end to this painful situation and eventually decides to separate, but she does not seem ready to accept this decision.
The 94th Academy Awards will be held on March 27, 2022.
