Madix, a black cat who loves to greet clients at the Gibson rental company’s office, was still in the office building when tornadoes swept through Kentucky a week and a half ago. He was last seen before the storm, and now that the three-story building had completely collapsed, Gibson had little confidence that his cat was still alive. “I didn’t understand how anything could have survived not only from a hurricane, but from the devastation it caused.” After a few days he gave up searching.

When he stood by the ruins last Sunday and suddenly heard something, Gibson couldn’t believe his ears: “I thought I heard a meow. Against my better judgment, I called out his name. Then meow again.” He did not immediately know the source of the sound, so he asked his colleagues to help him find it. Madix was eventually found in a pit in the ruins.

“It’s great to be in my arms again,” Gibson said. “If a cat really has nine lives, he has probably used eight of them in the past nine days.” The cat was fine. Of course he was hungry and thirsty, but Madix was unharmed. Gibson took Madix home, where he would remain for the rest of his ninth life as a lovable house cat.
