The Australian Open may be in full swing, but the Djokovic issue still resonates in Australia. Last night, the best tennis player Victoria Azarenka had nothing about it: “No injection, no playing policy is the best solution.”
If it is up to the two-time Grand Slam champion, a coronavirus vaccination will be mandatory for tennis players who participate in the WTA tournaments. The Belarusian, who has been a member of the WTA Players Council for years, said this in Melbourne.
Azarenka reached the third round of the Australian Open last night. Prior to that tournament, there was an uproar because Novak Djokovic tried to participate without the mandatory vaccination in Australia.
Azarenka acknowledged that introducing mandatory vaccination could be a legal challenge, but believes it would be “good for everyone” if the WTA had a “no injection, no play” policy. “Obviously to me. I believe in science. I believe in vaccination and I did,” the 32-year-old tennis player said. “I think it’s the only solution. To everyone in tennis, because we also travel a lot.”
The former No. 1 in the world acknowledges that forcing people to vaccinate can lead to problems. Some countries will not accept any commitment. So it will be a task to implement that.”
Azarenka described the controversy surrounding Djokovic as a “circus” and a reason to clarify. “Once a gray area appears in the regulations, there are a lot of questions and situations like this. In some cases, I think a black and white approach is necessary,” said the tennis star, who revealed she contracted an infection in November.
