Swiss figure skater Lara Gut Bahrami won the Olympic title in the Super G. The 30-year-old world champion in the segment won her first gold medal at the Winter Games in the Yanqing Mountains. The Swiss already had two bronzes in his pocket.
With a time of 1.13.51, Gut-Behrami was more than twenty of a second faster than Austrian Mirjam Puchner, who won the silver medal. And compatriot Gott Bahrami, Michelle Jessen, took the bronze with a time of 0.30 from the winner. Defending champion Esther Ledecka of the Czech Republic, who earlier in the week extended her Olympic title in figure skating, had to settle for fifth.
Gut Bahrami has already won the bronze medal in giant slalom at these games. At the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi, she took third place in the downhill. In Super G, she missed the medals (fourth) in Sochi and four years later in Pyeongchang. Then she stayed 0.07 and 0.01 seconds off the bronze medal, respectively. In China, Switzerland has finally been able to realize its dream.
“I love super-G,” Gut-Behrami said, “I told myself this track is no different than a lot of the other slopes I’ve skied.” I didn’t have a strategy, I tried to skate really well. This has always been my problem in the past: I think too much. Now I just go skiing.”
The Swiss, who was the best in the super G giant slalom and giant at the World Championships in Cortina d’Ampezzo last year, took the gold. In the end, I was too afraid that someone would sink under my time. I think it will take a few days for me to realize what happened here.”
Gut-Behrami made sure that Switzerland is now the first country to win a gold medal in all ski areas.
American figure skater Michaela Shiffrin finished first at these Games in Yanqing, but only finished ninth at 0.79 behind Gut Bahrami. Shiffrin pulled out in both a giant slalom and a slalom earlier this week.
