Formula 1 kicked off the 2022 season last weekend, with 23 races registered to the programme. Miami Grand Prix has recently been added to the calendar. Under the Concorde Agreement, Formula 1 can host a maximum of 24 races per year until the end of 2025. In any case, another competition in the US will be added soon. US media reports that the race in Las Vegas may already be added to the calendar next year. But the interest in the first category of motorsport far exceeds the number of races that Formula 1 can now hold.
Stefano Domenicali, President of Formula One, said in a conversation with Sky F1† “There is a lot of interest around the world. It is up to us to find the right balance and figure out what we want to see. But we also have to look at the historical value we want to keep in the calendar.” The Italian Formula 1 boss already stated in Bahrain last weekend that traditional racetracks are likely to disappear. “There are promoters with expired contracts, and some current GPs may disappear from the calendar.”
Domenicali says the interest isn’t just coming from Las Vegas. “Other cities are also interested in Formula 1. We are looking for balance and we know where the opportunities lie.” He states that the organization will soon develop a strategy to further develop the sport. Domenicali acknowledges that Africa is also on his wish list. Formula 1 was the last guest on the Kyalami circuit in 1993. Besides America and China, there is a lot of potential in Africa. There is a lot of interest out there and this is of course also one of the areas where we are not geographically represented,” concludes the CEO.
