Some playful dogs tear up almost anything in their path. Sally, an 8-month-old golden retriever, is no exception. For Belgian Grégory, the loot from his puppy was an envelope of 1,500 euros he left on the counter. The Belgian National Bank came to the rescue of the unfortunate Belgian.
Grégory set aside the marital bonus money for the car down payment. While he worked in his garage for a few hours, Sally was sinking her teeth into money. “When I got back, I discovered the torn envelope and bills on the floor.”
Was he angry at his four-legged friend? He told me, “Not at all.” RTL information† “I mostly blame myself for being more careful.”
mystery
At first, the Belgian tried to glue the torn paper himself. Literally, with a roll of tape, but that turned out to be impossible. “It was a real mystery. I was happy with her all evening. Some notes I was somewhat able to salvage, but others were more damaged. I assumed I wouldn’t be able to use the money anymore.”
Gregory turned to his bank for advice. He referred the man to the Belgian National Bank. A small setback: the National Bank has only one counter and it is located in Brussels. “I live in Liege,” continues de Waal. “My bank may take over the procedure, but then it will take a few weeks.” The guy decided to take a day off and travel himself to the capital.
Money laundering
In the National Bank, all conditions for cashing are met. “First of all, the damage to the coins must be involuntary,” explains spokesperson Gert Siut. Second, more than half of the note is still there. This condition is very important because otherwise the note can be replaced twice.”
Since Grégory tried to retrieve the banknotes himself, a thorough check of the money was still necessary. “It took ten business days,” Malik Sally explains. The National Bank says about this procedure: .. Exchange is a money laundering technique. That is why we have to be more careful and respect the law.”
did you know
Ten days after his first voyage, Gregory was able to raise his money in Brussels. Everything is fine, this ends well, because the Belgian was able to return the amount to the cent. Although he said it was annoying that the deposit was not possible and that he had to go back and forth to Brussels twice.
Finally, the National Bank has also announced that it is working on the quality of the banknotes in order to better prevent these kinds of setbacks in the future. It appears that “we are trying to make our observations stronger and more sustainable”. People often think that banknotes are made of paper, but they are actually made of cotton.
