The European Parliament’s Environment Committee has approved a bill banning the sale of new petrol and diesel cars from 2035.
From 2035, new cars will not be allowed to emit carbon dioxide, which means that combustion engines will be a taboo from that moment on. Existing cars may continue to drive, but from that moment on, only new hydrogen-powered cars and purely electric cars with a battery will be allowed.
Industrial fuel cars will also be banned, although they are technically carbon-neutral because they are made from carbon dioxide taken from the air. As many car brands invest heavily in these types of e-fuels, there is a chance that something may change.
The latter seems particularly evident because in many countries the charging structure and power grid are still far from ready to switch to electric driving. There will be another vote for the European Parliament and the entire Council of Europe. Car manufacturers hope that the decision will eventually be made to cut emissions by “only” 90 percent.
