Prince Charles faces a potentially awkward meeting this week with British Prime Minister Boris Johnson. They both attend the Commonwealth Summit in Rwanda and meet there for “a cup of tea”.
According to Clarence House, the meeting will take place on Friday. According to The Guardian, it will be the first time the two have met since a Thanksgiving prayer in honor of Queen Elizabeth’s throne jubilee earlier this month.
The meeting comes after reports of Charles criticizing the British government’s plans in private conversations. The Times, among others, reported earlier this month that the prince was unhappy with the British plan to take in asylum seekers in Rwanda. According to a source, Queen Elizabeth’s eldest son thought it was “appalling” and was disappointed with Prime Minister Johnson’s policies.
The UK signed an agreement with Rwanda in April to receive illegal immigrants and asylum seekers in the African country for a fee. The plan sparked a storm of protests and failed attempts by human rights activists to block flights through the courts. The first relay flight was scheduled for last week. However, the European Court of Human Rights has ruled that the UK is not allowed to bring people to Rwanda for the time being.
