Korea’s Jae Yeol succeeds Kim Yan Digkima as President of the International Skating Union (ISU). Kim won the presidential election at the ISU conference in Phuket, Thailand. Dijkima (77) was President of the World Assembly for six years. Drent succeeded Italian national Ottavio Cinquinta in 2016, who had been president for 22 years.
There were four candidates to succeed Dijkima in the elections. Kim has already won in the first round with 77 votes out of 119, beating candidates from the United States, Finland and Serbia. “I am very amazed at your tremendous support,” the first Asian chief of ISU said in his speech. “I want to be the president of all countries, regardless of their size and the region they are from. We are a family, together we can grow our sport.”
Kim, 53, was previously the president of the Korea Ski Association and was a member of the organizing committee for the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang. He has been a member of the ISU Board of Directors since 2016. Kim is the twelfth president of the International Federation.
very satisfied
The Dutch skiing association KNSB is “very satisfied” with Kim as the new president. “Based on the discussions we had with Kim Jae Yeol in the lead up to and during the conference, we are confident that he will lead the ISU into the fast-changing future in a modern way,” said General Manager Hermann. De Han.

The Netherlands will continue to be active on the ISU Board of Directors through Albert Hazelhoff. Hazelhoff was appointed as a member of the so-called ISU Council in Phuket. Former referee Hanjo Heidemann was given a place on the technical committee. Former top skater Douwe de Vries has been a member of the ISU Athletes’ Committee for several years.
