Boris van der West has successfully appealed the decision not to run for the presidency of the International Boxing Federation (IBA). The Dutchman was found sworn in by the Court of Arbitration for Sport in an appeal case on Tuesday.
Van der Forest has run as a candidate for current Russian President Omer Krimlev. However, just prior to the congress of the International Bar Association in Istanbul, it was reported that his candidacy had been declared invalid.
In addition to van der Forest, four nominated board members from the United States, New Zealand, Denmark and Sweden were told that they were not allowed to participate in the election. The Quartet had started its campaign ahead of schedule.
As a result, Omer Krimlev was re-elected as president without a candidate. It is remarkable that he committed the same crime as his opponents, but it was without consequences. Reason enough for Van der Vorst to sue the IBA with CAS.
“It’s a wonderful day,” van der Forest replied in NOS on the statement. “I think there’s been a new election, that’s how it should go. We deserve a fair chance.”
The television series surrounding the presidency of the International Junior Federation is a thorn in the side of the International Olympic Committee. Boxing threatens to lose Olympic position in the 2024 Games in Paris.
