France’s fire brigade controlled a very large forest fire in the southern region of Sevin on Saturday. The fire has stopped spreading, but it still covers an area of 650 hectares.
Thus, the most important stage is over, according to the fire brigade, which has deployed 950 firefighters. The fires are extinguished using aircraft. 520 firefighters are still in the area to control the blaze. Emergency services are talking about a “massive fire”.
Due to the high temperatures and low humidity and wind, there is still a risk of fire breaking out again.
The fire started near the village of Bordezac, about 100 kilometers north of Montpellier and the Mediterranean Sea. About a hundred people were evacuated and placed in holiday homes and restaurants. People in southern France are being urged to be vigilant this weekend as the risk of fires remains high.
Forest fires have already broken out in several places in southern France this year. The so-called Mistral kindles the fire. This is a strong wind that often rises in the Rhone River valley.
Because of the early and prolonged drought this year, nature in the south of France is just as dry at the beginning of July as it is usually at the beginning of August.
