Stiftung Warentest has put smartphones in their stride. In addition to the basic functions, camera, display, handling and battery, the stability of the hardware was also evaluated. For this purpose, the smartphones have been subjected to drop tests, scratch tests, fold tests if necessary as well as rain and diving tests. The phone is sprayed with one millimeter of water per minute for five minutes. In addition, devices declared by the manufacturer to be water-resistant (IPX7 or higher) are subjected to an immersion test according to the specified degree of protection.
The result shows that the vast majority of smartphones can withstand rain without any problems. All 40 models in the test handled the “good” or “very good” rain test.
In the overall rating, water resistance, along with drop and scratch testing as a stability rating, is just 5 percent. Basic functions (30 percent), camera (20 percent), screen, handling, and battery (15 percent each) are more important.
