Reports about ski areas that decide to close their doors for summer skiing fly around you. Hintertux Glacier is one of the few ski areas that is open 365 days a year for winter sports enthusiasts and will remain open today. Although the snow conditions aren’t great, the ski area aims to stay open for as long as possible. Summer skiing is important for athletes who usually use this period for training.
Many ski areas close off ski areas for summer skiing
You can’t escape your noticing that the ice conditions on the glaciers are far from ideal at the moment. After the news regarding the conclusion of the summer ski season in Stelvio, Italy, Zermatt also followed suit. Usually this last ski area in Switzerland, like the Hintertux Glacier, is open all year round for winter sports enthusiasts. But the current circumstances do not allow us to keep the doors open now. Saas-Fee has decided not to open it at all for the time being. The combination of winter with (very) little snow, high temperatures in the spring and many rainy days have serious consequences for the summer ski season. Even in the highest mountains, the snow conditions are not great.
Hintertux Glacier remains open
The ski area on the Hintertuxer Gletscher in Zillertal in Austria is one of the few ski areas open year-round for skiers and snowboarders. As long as possible, the Austrian glacier ski area will remain open to skiers this summer, Matthias Ding of Hintertuxer Gletscherbahnen told Tiroler Tageszeitung newspaper. Athletes (top) especially use this period for training and that is why the summer ski season, especially for them, is of great importance. Training is also given to incoming ski instructors, who will work next winter on the snow.
Waiting to see what the weather does
At the moment, only six kilometers of slopes are open on the Hintertux Glacier. That’s usually triple this time of year. Whether the ski area can remain open all summer or not depends on what the weather does. When the weather cools down and enough snow falls, summer is saved. Also in Zermatt people are waiting to see what the weather will do, and they hope to be able to open the ski area again as soon as possible.
