Amnesty International is in the process of reviewing its report on the tactics of the Ukrainian army. The human rights organization recently found that civilians are being put at risk by the military’s use of homes, apartment buildings, hospitals and schools as shelters and shooting sites for Russians.
The report was widely criticized. Ukrainian President Zelensky described it as Russian propaganda. Oksana Pokalchuk, head of Amnesty Ukraine, resigned over the report because she did not agree with its contents.
Pokalchuk says the Ukrainian branch of Amnesty International has repeatedly said that it should take into account the position of the Ukrainian Defense Forces. She says that didn’t happen in the end.
The report also received great attention in the Russian media loyal to the Moscow regime.
Independent experts will examine the Amnesty International investigation. The human rights organization said earlier in response to all the criticism that it still fully supported the report. Amnesty International also said that the report’s conclusion “in no way justifies” indiscriminate Russian attacks. “All parties to the conflict must at all times distinguish between military objectives and civilian objects.”
