Going on a motorbike vacation gives you absolute freedom. You can go where you want and of course drive along the most beautiful roads. In the Netherlands you know where you stand, but do you travel abroad? Then there are some important things to keep in mind. With these five tips, you’ll be safe and well-prepared on the road this (late) summer.
Tip 1: Make sure you know the traffic rules
Drivers abroad often have to adhere to different traffic rules than those in the Netherlands. For example, in some countries, different guidelines apply to driving through traffic jams and items that you must always have with you on the road. There are also other speed limits that you must adhere to. So, make sure you know the traffic rules outside before setting off.
You’ll find the traffic rules for each state on the KNMV Motorcyclist Association’s website. Or use the Going Abroad app for this. This was developed by the European Commission and contains the most important guidelines for EU countries.
Tip 2: Don’t forget your green card
In the Netherlands, you do not need a green card. This is an international insurance certificate with which you can prove that your motorcycle is insured abroad. In some countries, you must carry this card with you. Sometimes only a paper green card is valid. If you do not have motorcycle insurance yet: Check all the information, so that your motorcycle is properly insured and has no problems.
It is always wise to take your green card with you abroad on paper. So you can display it everywhere, if necessary. If you do not have a green card, you can request one from your insurance company. Plus, even if you’re probably too packed on a motorbike vacation, it’s still smart to check your travel insurance beforehand. Then you are protected while traveling from damage or theft of your valuables.
Tip 3: Think of the vignette in Austria and Switzerland
Does your trip take you through Austria or Switzerland? Then, just like motorists, you need a toll sticker to allow them to drive here. The poster is for sale in the ANWB as well as at the borders of these countries. It is worth buying it in advance, so that you can immediately cross the border and do not have to wait long.
Tip 4: Wear protective clothing
You are weak in motorbike traffic. So always wear protective clothing, even when the weather is warm. Make sure your clothes are well ventilated so they don’t get too hot. In addition, wear closed shoes or boots and gloves. And it’s not unimportant: choose a waterproof suit. It can always be attacked by heavy rain.
A good suit is of course important to your safety and in fact indispensable. In some cases, you will not be compensated for any damage if you do not wear a motorcycle protective suit.
Tip 5: Keep the tank full
Refuel outside on time. Sometimes it can take a long time before you come across a gas station again and of course you don’t want to run out of fuel on the way. It’s also smart to check out which countries cheap refueling is an option if you travel through many different countries. Prices sometimes vary slightly from country to country.
Finally, keep in mind that you cannot install at the gas station in every country. So always take cash with you. This way you will not face difficult situations at the pump.
