Pensioner exposes shameless scammers with cell phone screenshots

A pensioner from Wanfried was cheated out of several thousand Euros via Whatsapp. Instead of getting into the deal, she collected evidence against the fraudster.

Wanfried – This is rare documentation because Hannelore S. of Wanfried acted with lightning speed. You have now handed over the so-called screenshots of the online conversation to the police.

But first things first: On Thursday afternoon she receives a letter from her daughter. Her mobile phone is broken and all saved data is lost. “It wasn’t weird until now, my daughter wanted to buy a new one anyway,” says the pensioner, but he kept the new number separately. After just a few messages, the scammer starts working. The supposed daughter still has to pay the bills. Can the mother do that? This is where the woman suspects Wanfred because her daughter works in a bank herself. When she discovered the amount of 3,307.76 euros, she was sure: someone was trying to steal it.

She calls her daughter on her old cell phone number. They are accessible and know nothing about a broken mobile phone. After the offender sends the bank details, the woman cuts off the connection. The offender becomes more pressing and suddenly uses wrong rules. When the victim stops responding, he leaves her, but deletes all messages. In hindsight: the pensioner has already made alleged screenshots. The account is managed at Sparkasse Unna / Kamen. She has now presented her evidence to the police, who have launched an investigation.

The police give the following advice: If someone you know calls you but under an unknown number, do not save the number automatically.

Ask the people you know (daughter/son) for the old known number. Always be skeptical of financial claims – no matter if it is by mail, email, telephone or messaging services.
