US supermarket group Walmart wants to hire 40,000 more employees for the upcoming holiday season to help with crowds in stores and online orders. That’s less than the 150,000 extra workers hired by the largest US supermarket company last year for the holiday season, which runs between Thanksgiving and New Year’s.
Walmart is the largest private employer in the United States. The company says it will first ask current employees if they’d like to work longer hours during the holidays, the busiest time of the year for US retailers. Then Walmart starts looking at outside forces.
Walmart may be more reluctant to hire additional temporary employees due to rising inflation. As a result, Americans are on the cutting edge of things. A senior company executive said Tuesday that customers are still spending money, especially on special occasions like the holidays. He said he was optimistic despite inflation fears.
In the coming period, more major US companies will announce their plans to hire additional employees during the holidays. Amazon is also hiring several additional people for that period. Package delivery company UPS said it will hire an additional 100,000 employees this holiday season to help with delivery and distribution.
