Lando Norris has joined Max Verstappen by issuing a stark warning to the FIA that more accidents will come if the sport continues with its plans to ban tire heating.
Formula 1 is working to phase it out, with Pirelli testing at the US Grand Prix to assess how 2023 rubber can withstand temperatures as low as 50 degrees. Driver feedback has been negative so far, with complaints centered primarily on safety concerns. “That’s the problem with that, it’s more unsafe than not good to drive,” Norris said in Mexico.

Norris further explains: “The current Formula 1 car, which is custom built with all sorts of aerodynamic cars and stuff, isn’t made for cold tyres. It’s not like Formula 2 or Formula 3 cars where you can do anything and everything on the track. That’s not how it works. So We will have discussions about it.” The young Briton joins his college Verstappen, who also thinks so.
Verstappen
Two-time champion Verstappen claimed earlier this week that there would be “a lot of meltdowns” if Formula 1 continued with its plan. Asked if he agreed with that assessment, Norris admitted: “Yes, there would be. Those were the best possible circumstances. [in Austin] To get the tires – hot, too warm, a quick first sector to warm up the tires, and it wasn’t good to drive until then. [Het was] It is very easy to get front and back locking. It was absolutely unpredictable. So once you go to a cooler track, or when it’s a little humid or something, at some point not everyone can control the car anymore. No driver really wants that.”
