More than 45% of carbon dioxide emissions, a major cause of global climate change, are due to electricity and heat production. Reducing this percentage is one of the most effective ways to combat global warming. The National Hockey League (NHL), the organization that organizes professional ice hockey in the United States and Canada, has teamed up with SAP to create a cloud-based platform that helps reduce carbon emissions.
The NHL found that club activities accounted for nearly 70% of the total carbon footprint of the world’s premier ice hockey league. The NHL tasked SAP with finding a technical solution to reduce impact and protect the sport’s survival. The result is a data-driven platform available to all clubs and their stadium partners to transform and ultimately help the league’s environmental and sustainability goals.
NHL Value Metrics
With ‘NHL Venue Metrics, Powered by SAP’, the NHL can measure and analyze the carbon footprint of its clubs and yards. For example, energy and water consumption, waste quantity and recycling performance are examined. These ideas allow the NHL to reduce environmental impact where possible while also allowing the sport to thrive and be preserved for future generations.
The NHL place metrics consist of three main components:
- Data Collection: A platform that acts as an interface between clubs and site partners allowing them to share relevant consumption and environmental data with the university.
- Data Calculation and Validation: The processing and validation engine allows the university to track data consistency and identify reporting errors and calculation formulas to prepare the university’s emissions inventory.
- Data Reports & Insights: The dashboard shows relevant corporate and club level environmental, consumer, and financial insights from various metrics that represent the NHL’s known environmental impact.
co-innovation
The technology behind “NHL Venue Metrics, Powered by SAP” extracts powerful analytics from one of the most advanced databases and represents the latest extensive use of the SAP Business Technology Platform (SAP BTP). Throughout the partnership period, SAP BTP has been at the forefront of the university’s co-innovation efforts in many areas of their business.
Club operational data is processed using SAP HANA Cloud and visualized using SAP Analytics Cloud. Insights from the platform support the NHL in identifying environmental trends, sharing important lessons shaped by these trends, and ultimately implementing best practices across clubs to reduce the league’s collective environmental impact.
sustainable operation
In September 2022, the NHL invited all club and stadium managers to use the platform and enter historical data from 2018 to mid-2022 to create and analyze an appropriate baseline. With input from clubs, “NHL Venue Metrics, Powered by SAP” is already underway this current season, bringing the league one step closer to a more sustainable process.
“The NHL has been embedding sustainable business practices in the league and its member clubs for years,” said Omar Mitchell, NHL Vice President for Sustainable Infrastructure and Growth Initiatives. “NHL Venue Metrics is a true game-changing innovation that helps us understand our environmental impact and create actionable insights to improve our environmental impact.”
“At SAP, one of our priorities is to provide partners with sustainable technology solutions so they can track and incorporate achievable goals into their businesses,” said Amy Schulze, Senior Director of Global Sponsorship at SAP. “NHL is a long-standing co-innovation partner of our company. With the foundation of its cloud software built on SAP BTP, we have not only been able to develop a custom solution to meet its business goals, but the solution also comes at no cost to clubs. It is a huge step forward as the NHL aims to reduce carbon emissions and sustainable efficiency improvement.”
