SCHAGEN – The KopGroep Libraries, together with Bureau Boeiend, offer an online art lecture on British artist JMW Turner (1775-1851). Turner is best known for his beautiful paintings of misty landscapes in magical light. Wouter from Bureau Boeiend will speak about the artist’s life and work this evening. The lecture will take place on Wednesday, November 23 from 19:30 to 21:30 via Zoom. For tickets go to www.tinyurl.com/lectureturner.
Turner was born in London in 1775. His talent soon became apparent, as his father was convinced early on that he would become a painter. When he was fourteen years old, he already ended up in the prestigious Royal Academy, and was conditionally accepted as a member a year later. During his apprenticeship at the Academy, he exhibited many watercolors, even showing his first landscape in oil painting, Fishermen at Sea (1796). The work began his artistic career as a marine painter. In 1799 he became a participant in the Academy. Turner traveled all over Europe: Holland, of course, but he also came to present-day Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, France, Switzerland and Italy, where he visited Venice several times and became an honorary member of the Academy of St. Luke in Rome.
Turner also traveled through the Netherlands
Early in his career, Turner was still firmly rooted in the tradition of English landscape painting. Financial success soon followed and then artistic experimentation, both in style and material. Particularly known are Turner’s later works, showing a world shrouded in mist, immersed in a magical light. It is these works that make him perhaps the definitive painter of the English Romantic scene – but in fact much more than that.
