Democratic candidate Katie Hobbs has won the Arizona gubernatorial election. Hobbs defeats Republican rival and Trump ally Carrie Lake.
The loss of Lake, former presenter and rising star of the Make America Great Again movement, is another blow to Donald Trump, who today may announce his candidacy for the 2024 presidential election. Lake was won in the 2020 presidential election not by Biden, but by Trump accepted, a claim for which there was no evidence.
Republican officials also urged voters in Arizona not to vote for Lake. Among others, so did Liz Cheney, a well-known Trump critic and daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney.
She was criticized for this by Lake, who sarcastically thanked Cheney in a letter for a television ad urging voters to ignore Lake. According to Lake, this would have only led to more donations for her campaign.
Cheney now has the last word on Twitter. “You’re welcome, Carrie Lake”, Say With attached “Letter of Thanks” from LLC.
A call to unity
Lake’s defeat follows the loss of two other top state election deniers: Senate candidate Blake Masters and Mark Finchim, candidate Minister of Foreign Affairs, The highest-ranking official in the state.
Since then, Hobbes has claimed victory: “Democracy is worth the wait”, He said them on Twitter. “Thank you, Arizona. I am very honored and very proud to be your next governor.” Hobbs also called for unity and said it would work for all Arizona residents, including those who did not vote for her.
She doesn’t want Lake to admit her loss yet and quit Twitter: “Arizonas recognize bullshit when they see it.”
Battle for the House of Representatives by a majority
Arizona was once a majority Republican state, but that has changed in recent history. Hobbs succeeds Republican Governor Doug Ducey, who was unable to run for re-election.
The battle for control of the House of Representatives, the lower house of the US Congress, has not yet been officially resolved. Republicans must get a minimum of 218 out of 435 seats To be able to claim a majority. The party needs an extra seat.
Last weekend, it became clear that Democrats would retain a slim majority in the US Senate for the next two years. Democrat Catherine Cortez Masto wins the Nevada elections. At the beginning of December a second round in Georgia will follow, but that is no longer decisive.
