Sailor Marit Baumeister won bronze on Monday at the European Championships in the Elka-6 class. The 34-year-old Friesian, who returned to the World Cup last month after giving birth to a baby girl, dropped one place in the standings on the final day.
Baumeister finished third in Hyères, France, with 50 points. The European title went to Agata Barwinska from Poland with 44 points. The silver medal went to Switzerland’s Maud Gaiet, who finished with 48 points.
Baumeister returned last month to compete in the World Cup in the United States after giving birth to her daughter in May. Al Frizi has been leading for a while in the World Cup but has fallen further and further down the pecking order over the past few days, partly due to fatigue.
Bouwmeester finished ninth in Kemah (Texas). At the European Championships off the coast of Hyères in the south of France, she moved up the rankings during the tournament.
Bouwmeester would like to participate in the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. She’s won a medal at the last three Games: silver in London (2012), gold in Rio de Janeiro (2016), and bronze in Tokyo last year.
In the men’s Ilca 7 class, Niels Broekhuizen was the best Dutchman in 10th place. He fell three places in the standings on the last day. The European title went to Pavlos Kontidis of Cyprus.
