Caroline Wozniacki has made a successful return to professional tennis. The 33-year-old Dane won the first round of the WTA tournament in Montreal over Australian Kimberly Pearl: 6-2, 6-2.
Former world number one Wozniacki announced his return to competitive tennis at the end of June, after an absence of nearly three and a half years. She wants to participate in the US Open this year and also wants to participate in the Olympic Games in Paris in 2024.
The Danish was knocked out after the 2020 Australian Open, the Grand Slam tournament she won in 2018. Between October 2010 and February 2018, she was ranked No. 1 in the world rankings for 71 weeks and won a total of thirty tournaments. In her farewell at the time, Wozniacki spoke of her desire to start a family with her husband, David Lee. She is now a mother of two.
Wozniacki lost her first match, but immediately recovered. She won the service game against the world’s 115th-ranked Australian three more times in the first set. The 25-year-old Pearl lost her serve 3-2 in the second set and the Dane also won the next two matches.
After 97 minutes, Wozniacki was able to raise her hands in the air. “What a great place to be back. “I love playing here in Montreal,” she said. In the second round, she will face the winner of the match between ninth seed Marketa Vondrousova of the Czech Republic and Mayar Sherif of Egypt.
“It feels great. It’s my first game in over three years,” said Wozniacki, who won her first competition as a mom. “It’s so crazy. I just checked the time. My children are sleeping now. This delicious. So I’ll see them soon after they take care of me and eat some food. That’s the beauty of early play. I have all afternoons with them.”
