Garnewerd – The SummerJazzCyclingTour will be taking place for the 37th time on Saturday, August 26th. This version is back to normal, so it’s as special as ever. The jazz cyclist can again choose a program or follow one of the five proposed routes. You can also switch to other methods. And how proud the organization is to collaborate with the Prince Claus Conservatoire and Zummerbühne.
Opening Friday night again at Simplon in Groningen. The introduction, subtitled Ein Abend aus Berlin, brings together two generations of Berlin jazz musicians. The young Insomnia Brassband and the legendary Ruf Der Heimat show that there is still life in free jazz.
On Saturday afternoon, there were more German bands on the church shelves, such as the Christian Marien Quartet and the Uwe Oberg Lacy Pool with fine clarinetist Rudi Mahal in the ranks. From Switzerland, Tom Arthurs / Giovanna Bissi comes to Fietstourland. From Zurich comes the Tomorrow Trio presented by Omri Ziegele with national percussion champion Han Bennink. Greats from England are also expected: the Trevor Watts/Ferrand Weston duo.

Singer Una Bergin pays tribute to Father Sean Bergin’s work with a special composition for her band, Snowbull. Clarinetist Stephen Kammerman composed Maison Moderne after his residency at Theo van Doesburghuis in Paris. Saxophonist Bo van de Graaf presents his new project full of animal stories: The Artis Orkest.
Fantasy landscapes pass in the undercurrent orchestral music of Iman Sbargaren, film scores by Marzio Scholten Reuss and the minimal voices of Arvo Pårt and Aphex Twin can be found in the Artvark Saxophone Quartet. Collective improvisation and electronics are combined in the Rotterdam Hydra group. Violinist Georges Dumitriou also uses electronics in his new Monk on Viola solo show.
Groningen’s roots are featured in Timber3 + 1, the new Frans Vermeerssen Trio and in Fresh Turkish Percussion by bassist Esat Ikincioglu. The Prince Claus Conservatoire presents three formations at ZJFT: Skypainters, Clarimba, and New Dutch Jazz Quintet. The Zummerbühne musical theater company, which will be in Maarhuizen this summer, will also present two concerts by the Arctic Orchestra and the Zummerbühne Quartet.
Lots to choose from at ZJFT this year. With many thanks to the many volunteers who were busy at ZJFT during the last weekend of August.
“We’re still the festival where you’re bound to miss half. And you still have to ride the bike yourself. Go to the second group. Then you have a much greater chance of still being able to make it, 36 years of experience has taught us,” says the organization.
