Donald Trump made a report to a prison in the US state of Georgia on Thursday. The former US president left again after posting bail and taking a picture of him.
Trump landed at Atlanta Airport on his private jet and then took off for the prison in a motorcade. There, he posted the bail of about 185,000 euros, which means that he can wait for the case freely.
Then Trump took a selfie, or a police file photo. This was the first time in American history that a former president had to appear as a suspect in such a photograph.
About half an hour later, Trump left again. “It’s a sad day for the United States,” the former president said. He described the prison events as “a travesty of justice” and said he had done nothing wrong.
The case revolves around influencing the election results
Trump had to report to prison because he was suspected of trying to reverse the results of the 2020 presidential election in Georgia. In addition to the former president, eighteen others are on trial.
“Trump and the other defendants charged in this case refused to accept that Trump lost. They knowingly participated in a conspiracy to unlawfully change the outcome of the election,” prosecutors wrote earlier.
Several of the 19 suspects, including former Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani, had previously turned themselves in to the Fulton County Jail in Atlanta.
One of the key pieces of evidence in the case is a phone conversation between Trump and Brad Raffensperger, an election official in Georgia during the 2020 election. In that conversation, Trump asked Raffensburger to “find” votes for him. The conversation also plays an important role in the other federal criminal case against Trump over the election.
