Valkenburg (ANP) – Residents and business people in Valkenburg must also do something themselves against flooding. Mayor Dan Privo said this on regional channel L1 Monday night. He said this after emergency consultations on short-term measures. The municipality is considering lifting restrictions and other similar small measures to prevent water from overflowing during heavy rains. The city mayor and local council members will make decisions on Tuesday about the new approach to flooding.
The past two years have shown that floods in Valkenburg always happen in the same places. That means residents must also do something about the nuisance, says Privoe. “This is the new reality,” he added. “In two years, the water has entered the same people three times. And the insurance companies say, ‘You don’t have to come to us anymore.'”
And last Friday, some parts of Valkenburg were hit by floods for the second time in a short period. It happened earlier on the 22nd of June this year. This relates to flooding in Grote Strait, Nirhem, Berklin and the center, where water entered homes and parking lots. And in July 2021, the city center of Valkenburg was flooded, causing great damage to residents and businessmen.
rapid climate change
Prevo pointed to rapid climate change. “We have outgrown the new reality,” he added. “Just look at Switzerland, Slovenia, northern Italy and southern Germany. We have to come up with a new approach together. This is the reality we have to live with.”
“Everyone should hurry up. In the short term, we want to get permission from the Water Board to drain excess water into the Jeol River at an accelerated rate. We have to drill a hole in the quay wall for that.”
Privo went on to say that criminals are taking advantage of the plight of people, especially the victims of the floods that occurred two years ago. Among other things, they will provide financial “aid” to downtown entrepreneurs who suffered significant flood damage in 2021. “I have conveyed those signals to the public prosecution and the minister,” he said. “Criminals use cash-strapped people. They demand something in return. This causes the upper world to mix with the underworld.” Prevoo does not know how many cases there are. “People who have to wait a long time to get their money have reached the limits of their intelligence, and therefore they become vulnerable.”
