to updateThe US Department of Justice has added three charges to the case against former President Donald Trump regarding withholding classified documents. According to CNN, one relates to intentionally withholding defense materials, and the other two relate to obstruction of justice.
In court papers released Thursday, prosecutors allege that Trump ordered employees at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida to delete security footage when he learned he was under investigation for withholding classified documents.
A second Trump employee has also been charged in the case. It’s about Carlos de Oliveira, who works as a maintenance worker at the Trump Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida. Prosecutors say he is guilty of obstruction of justice when he helped the former president hide documents requested by authorities at Mar-a-Lago.
De Oliveira is also said to have lied during FBI interrogation, in which he voluntarily participated. He reportedly said that he was not involved in moving the boxes of documents and that he had never witnessed it.
Another Trump employee, his aide Walt Nauta, was previously accused for the same reason and pleaded not guilty in court.
It was announced last week that the trial will begin on May 20 next year. Nearly forty charges have already been brought against Trump for allegedly taking secret documents with him when he left the White House at the beginning of 2021. He claims he did nothing wrong and last month said he was innocent in court in Miami.
