For Talon Grykbauer and Arantxa Ros, the US Open was over after one round. Botic van de Zandschulp reached the second round. He will compete against Britain’s Dan Evans. The tournament continues in New York from Monday, August 22, to Sunday, September 10.
Veenendaler will be the last to play on Thursday on the fourth day of the US Open. The world number 65 will face Evans in the fourth match of the day on Court 11.
Van de Zandschulp and Evans have a women’s doubles match, a women’s singles match, and another men’s match. The first matches start at 5pm Dutch time. It is certainly expected that the match will not start until 10:30pm and may not be played until Dutch Night. Van de Zandschulp and No. 26 Evans have never met before.
Van de Zandschulp reached the second round without much effort. His opponent, Jordan Thompson, retired due to injury after the first set. If he also beats Evans, he could face world number one Carlos Alcaraz in the third round.
Championship in America is about recovery. Van de Zandschulp injured his ankle after Wimbledon and does not have high expectations. This is his second time playing in the US Open. Last year, he lost in the second round in four sets to Frenchman Corentin Moute.
Kohlhof advanced to the second round in doubles
Wesley Kohlhoff earned a spot in the second round of the US Open Doubles Championship. He and his British partner Neil Skupski were too strong for Chris Eubanks and Ben Shelton, who are considered the future of American tennis, 7-5, 7-6 (5). Kohlhoff and Skupski took first place in New York. Last year they reached the final of the US Open. Kohlhof also reached the last Grand Slam final of the year in 2020, then with Croatian Nikola Mektic.
Arancha Rus
Ross failed in the first round because she was unable to perform against Madison Keys (2-6, 4-6). She has only reached the second round of the US Open once, in 2011. This means that she has not been able to properly continue her glorious season. Ross won the Hamburg European Open in July.
Greek Talon Track
The tournament also ends after one round in favor of Talon Greekspor, ranked 24th in the world. He lost the battle against top talent Arthur Fels. The five-game match lasted four hours. Both players suffered from cramps, but the Frenchman won 4-6, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4, 7-5. “I struggled physically to some extent,” Greek Spur said in a conversation with this website.
The Dutchman participated in the US Open twice before. His best performance came in 2021 when he reached the second round. Last year, he lost in the first round to Argentine Federico Correa.
Defending the heroes Alcaraz and Swatic
Last year, the men’s title went to Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz. In the women’s race, Poland’s Iga Swiatek was the best. They defeated Casper Ruud and Ons Jabeur respectively in the final. The US Open can be watched exclusively on Eurosport in the Netherlands.
