Jayco AlUla will only appear at the start of the sixteenth stage of the Vuelta a España with three riders on Tuesday. Ethiopian climber Welay Hagos Berhe tested positive for coronavirus on his second rest day and will not complete his first major tour.
The 78th edition of the Tour of Spain is starting to look like a nightmare for Jekko Alala. The Australian squad had to say goodbye to its captains Eddie Dunbar and Filippo Zanna at an early stage, while Michael Hepburn and Callum Scotson have already returned home.
And now Wilay Hagos Berhe also has to surrender. The 21-year-old new pro was on his first Grand Tour and was 128th in the general classification after fifteen stages, just under three hours behind leader Sepp Kos. The climber from Ethiopia has already grabbed the spotlight this season with short appearances in the Tour of Austria (sixth in the final classification) and the Vuelta a Castilla y Leon (ninth). At the Tour of Switzerland, Berhe finished sixteenth.
With Dutchman Jan Maas, German Felix Engelhart and Italian Matteo Sobrero, there are only three Jayco AlUla riders left in the race.
