DrTurkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is promoting a factory in Turkey for Tesla CEO Elon Musk. The official Anatolia news agency reported that Erdogan asked Musk to build a manufacturing facility in his country during a meeting held at the Turkish House, a skyscraper near the United Nations in New York. Erdogan is visiting the United States to attend the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly. Tesla and the Turkish Embassy in Washington did not immediately respond to Reuters’ requests for comment.
Musk disagrees with the Turkish government over his platform, and in other cases, the social media company has defied Turkish court orders.
In August, Tesla expressed interest in building a factory in India to produce a low-cost electric car. Tesla currently operates six factories and is building a seventh factory in Mexico to expand its global presence. Musk said in May that the automaker would likely choose a location for a new factory by the end of the year.
Musk will also meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in California on Monday. Musk announced on X that the talks will be about artificial intelligence (AI).
