On average, there is a wildlife incident somewhere in Austria every seven minutes. Tens of thousands of animals die as a result, but rarely human lives are lost as well. Artificial intelligence (AI) will now be used to prevent wildlife incidents in the future.
Nearly 500 people were injured in wildlife accidents across Austria last year. More than 70,000 animals are known to have been killed, but experts say the number of unreported cases is much higher. Most wildlife incidents were recorded in the areas of Grieskirchen, Mistelbach, Neusiedl am See and southeastern Styria.
Artificial intelligence analyzes the movements and locations of wild animals
Modern cars already have assistance systems that can use infrared sensors to detect animals or people on the road at an early stage in the dark. But there are also hopes for a project at FH Hagenberg. Images captured from drones are evaluated with the help of artificial intelligence and the positions and movements of wild animals are analysed. After collecting enough data, it is possible to identify sections of the road where there are particularly high numbers of animals crossing the road and integrate this information into navigation systems or online mapping services.
The first tests were carried out around Hagenberg and at Gänserndorf in Lower Austria.
