European golfers won the 44th Ryder Cup on Sunday. In Rome, Team Europe was too strong for the USA 16.5-11.5.
Tommy Fleetwood provided the half point needed with a score of 14-10 to secure the overall victory at Marco Simone Golf & Country Club. He defeated Englishman Rickie Fowler in the singles final.
After the second day the Europeans were already 10.5-5.5 ahead. The Americans fought back on the final day thanks to victories by Brooks Koepka and Xander Scheufele, among others, but ultimately failed to achieve comprehensive victory.
The Europeans needed 14.5 points to achieve victory. The Americans needed 14 points to defend their title in Rome. They won that 19-9 two years ago in Wisconsin.
Europe won the Ryder Cup for the 15th time, compared to 27 victories for the United States. Twice the meeting ended inconclusively.
The Ryder Cup is a golf competition held every two years between twelve European players and twelve American players. It is the most important tournament in which top male golfers play as a team.
